    Ha ha. Ok. No, you are right. It is not her. The legs are different. It was too early in the morning and I got caught but it is not Heidi. This woman is also shorter.

    NW chats to the former supermodel, now host of Project Runway in the US as well as Germany's Next Top Model

    Heidi, what has made your life and marriage to Seal such a great experience?

    We had a very strong connection from the beginning. It was love at first sight. He's a very gentle giant of a man — a true gentleman, a strong person, a good man. He has a wonderful way of looking at the world and making his way in life. I really appreciate that and I saw that in him from the beginning.

    What were you looking for in a man when you became involved with Seal?

    I was looking for the right man who you can be yourself with and feel comfortable with. Someone you can laugh with and not worry about putting on an act or a mask to project some sort of image. You want to find that kind of magical … togetherness. He had that kind of beauty to his whole person. He just walks into a room and radiates this wonderful spirit and presence and it's kind of overwhelming.

    Would you describe your husband as an incurable romantic?

    Oh, yes! He thinks about romance all the time. He's very attentive to things like that. He wants to create a memory of certain occasions and I like to do that, too. Sometimes it will be just the way he does something for me. One year he gave me a beautiful bracelet and did so in just this incredibly special way. I woke up in the middle of the night to breastfeed one of our sons and when I went to take the baby out of the crib to feed him I suddenly saw the bracelet on my wrist. [seal] had put it on me while I was sleeping. It was such a beautiful gesture on his part. Our engagement was also so beautiful. He thinks about these things all the time and if he gives me a gift he wants to give it in a special way that will make it so much more memorable. So he lives and breathes romance, it's part of his entire aura.

    You've had three children at a point in your career where many people might have been advising you to wait until later ...

    Oh, a lot of my friends were telling me it would hurt my career and it would be difficult to get back in after taking some time off. I had people say to me, "Is this what you want to do with your life?" And my answer was yes. Children are so precious and if you try to plan too much in terms of your career you may lose out for the rest of your life. As things turned out, my husband and I wanted to keep going and not just be done with one child. We also wanted the children to be close together in ages and so we decided to carry on.

    Who's the disciplinarian in the family? Do you have a good cop/bad cop routine?

    No, it varies. [seal] definitely has more patience than I have and he will explain things in much more depth and length to the children than I will. My nature is more to say, "It should be like this, please do it this way and don't do that," whereas he will take his time and try to reason more — even though, of course, our children are still very young. I like doing 10 things at once and so I don't want to spend a lot of time explaining things, [whereas] my husband is very chatty. But that's good. We kind of balance each other out that way and that's good for the kids.

    What qualities do you have that helped you become a successful businesswoman?

    I always treated modelling as a business and I've always been very organised. From the very start, I would keep clippings of my magazine spreads and ask my agency to find out where my photo shoots [were] being published. I also think I had an advantage in that I was more centred and wasn't into partying and living the high life. I had fun, but I was reasonable about it! [Laughs.]

    Were there ever any moments early on in your career when you felt frustrated by the fact that you didn't fit the Kate Moss waif look that was in then?

    No. I loved the life I was able to lead. I was a pretty independent person and for me this was the best kind of life I could have imagined anyone my age having. I had a lot of fun when I started out and had the chance to travel the world and stay in beautiful hotels while earning good money for posing for a few hours on some exotic beach. But I found out very quickly that I wasn't very "high fashion" and it was difficult for me to get a lot of work in the '90s when you weren't supposed to look healthy and happy, but more starved and sad.

    Did you sit down and devise a business plan for yourself?

    It was in my head. I knew that if I wanted to stay in this business I had to look outside the box and eventually branch out into other areas. It was in my nature … to treat modelling as a job and not take it home with me. So I took charge of my own destiny and became very attentive to every aspect of my career. I was my own manager. Those kinds of experiences teach you not to be indifferent to your life and your work — you have to treat modelling as a business and your body as your primary asset. This is a job where you have to work out regularly, keep your body toned and make it as perfect as possible.

    Do you tell aspiring models not to starve themselves to be thin?

    I emphasise to the girls who come on the show [Germany's Next Topmodel] they should be eating healthily. They don't need to starve, not at all. But they have to learn to look after themselves. In many cases, the girls who were competing were eating garbage — things like pancakes and waffles and a lot of junk [food], which is not going to help them. You would hardly see any of them eating any vegetables or salads or any protein — not even an apple. It was kind of shocking. But they're young girls and a lot of young people eat badly. I try to explain to them they have to be fit. Models need to have some energy to be able to deal with long days on a photo shoot. You won't last if you're not eating healthily and you don't have the kind of discipline and mental toughness it takes to succeed.

    What is the best piece of advice you can give to your aspiring models?

    Modelling is a job. For girls who want to be successful it's not something they should approach lightly. You should be professional, show up on time, prepare, and earn your money. Girls should also be aware of what they're expected to do at a photo shoot in terms of nudity, since there is often that kind of pressure —especially when you're just starting out and trying to make your mark. I also tell them they have to get a thicker skin. You have to handle criticism. All that stuff. A lot of people are looking at you and judging you. That's the nature of the job.

    What would you say to your ex-Flavio Briatore if you happened to bump into him one day? After all, he cheated on you while you were pregnant with his daughter Leni.

    I'm not sure yet. [Pauses.] I've thought about that many times and I think it would have to be on the spur of the moment. I don't know. We'll have to wait and see what happens if our paths were to cross.

    Do you have any particular personal philosophy that guides you in life?

    I have pretty good instincts that tell me to keep moving forward and focus on the bigger picture. I don't really look back on bad times. For me, life is about enjoying yourself because you only live once. We should try to make the most of things and follow our dreams.

    Do you have any plans on returning to live in Europe one day?

    We have no plans right now. We have a beautiful nest right now in LA and the show [Project Runway] is going to move to LA, so everything is very good for us to be here for the time being. Maybe I miss some of my friends in Germany but when you're a mother you don't have a lot of time to go out with friends anyway.

    You and your husband both have very successful careers. Some well-known couples don't like to get involved with each other's professional lives to avoid possible friction. Do you and Seal talk to each other about your careers?

    Yes, all the time. We don't tell each other what to do, but we try to offer advice and our thoughts to each other. We'll tell each other what we're planning on doing, how we feel about certain business ventures. I'll ask my husband about which business deal he likes better if I have some options on the table. Or I'll give him my thoughts on some songs or some lyrics and he'll let me listen to some of the songs he's working on and ask me what I think.

    What's it like balancing your career demands with the responsibility of being a mother to three young children?

    It works! It's not as difficult as I thought it would be. I usually travel twice a year with my husband and my kids — once in February to Germany [to tape Germany's Next Topmodel] and then to New York for five weeks for Project Runway. Otherwise I can do most of my work in LA, except for a photo shoot here and there. That leaves a lot of time for me to be with my husband and our family and have that kind of togetherness you need to be happy.

    Your husband is known for being a very slick dresser. What style advice do you have for men?

    It's so much more fun to be a woman when it comes to clothes. Men have it so hard. A man is pants and a jacket and a T-shirt. I like men who have a more relaxed style. When I think of my husband, what I like about his choice of clothes is that he can be very versatile. He can be wearing jeans with a cool T-shirt and wild sneakers. But when we go to the Oscars, he is so English. He would have a perfectly tailored YSL suit on and a beautiful tie and a tailored shirt. He took one of my diamond earrings, though, and attached the back of the tie to the front. He has more style than me, I think!

    I knew it was Heidi and came here to confirm it. Horray it was Heidi that I saw at the show. I tried to go backstage to get a picture of her but she was bone. She must've bolted out the show the moment it was over. The hair cut is super cute, thought and like it better then the other that I saw.
