My spin:
Whew! That’s a lot of matches. Do you see a theme, though? Look at the big names of many on the losing end: Irina Shayk, Rachel Hunter, Elle Macpherson, Laetitia Casta, Eva Herzigova, Angie Everhart, Molly Sims, Elsa Benitez, Karen Mulder. It’s a crop of supermodels!

 

I’ll pick out a few of the most interesting results. First, Brooklyn Decker’s drubbing of Irina Shayk was pretty shocking. This one figured to be a toss up of sorts, but Brooklyn got over 3/4 of the vote. 

 

Next, Genevieve Morton’s easy win over Elle Macpherson was just as surprising, especially since she captured about 2/3 of the vote over the former #1 model. Elle’s ranking has been declining the past couple of years, all the way to #8 beginning at these friendly matches, and it’ll do so again with this result.

 

Next, Cindy Crawford’s sqeaker over Laetitia Casta. I expected a close one here between two all-time supermodels, and we got just that.

 

Next, Hannah Ferguson’s wipeout of Michelle Vawer. Hannah has been shooting up the rankings every year. She entered friendly play at #16, and that’s sure to shoot even higher after such a great showing.

 

Finally, I’ll mention the rookie battle, narrowly won by Tanya Mityushina over Bo Krsmanovic. It was a battle the whole way and shows that both are very evenly matched.

Wow.  I think 2 models that I voted for ended up winning their match. I'm most surprised that Marloes Horst beat Yesica.

My spin:
Old school made a comeback in a couple of key matches in this final batch of friendly matches. Kathy Ireland won an interesting match against Sara Sampaio, and Judit Masco prevailed over Kelly Rohrbach. 

 

But, new school won a few, too, including Alyssa Miller’s close victory over one of my favorites, Vendela Kirsebom. Kate “The Great” Upton also scored an impressive victory over Veronica Varekova.

Nina Agdal continues her run at #1, and Bar Refaeli stays right on Nina’s wonderful behind in second position. From there, Brooklyn Decker leapt over Marisa Miller after her impressive win over Irina Shayk. Genevieve Morton and the two Hannahs (Davis and Ferguson) made significant jumps into the top ten, and they sit just behind Rebecca Romijn. Josie Maran stayed at #9, and Elle Macpherson’s loss to Genevieve Morton knocked her back but not out of the top ten. 

 

Irina Shayk was the biggest casualty of the former top ten, as she was trounced by Brooklyn Decker and dropped 10 spots to #15. Paulina Porizkova’s loss to Hannah Davis was enough to tumble her to #16, and Petra Nemcova’s loss to Heidi Klum dropped Petra to #12.

Here’s the schedule for the second cycle of 2016 friendly matches.

 

Despite the name, these count for rankings and potentially have a big impact on any given model’s road in the upcoming 2016 SI Swimsuit Model Tournament.

 

In my opinion, the highlight of the schedule is Nina Agdal vs. Heidi Klum. I’ve loved Heidi since the day I first saw her in SI in 1998, and the only model to spark those same feelings since then was when Nina arrived on the scene 14 years later.

 

For many others, the highlight is Bar Refaeli vs. Marisa Miller. These two ladies are the only ones to win the SI Swimsuit Model Tournament. Marisa was our inaugural winner in 2013, and Bar has followed that up with back-to-back championships in 2014 and 2015. They’ll be meeting for the third time in history, including last year’s championship match, and Marisa is seeking revenge.

 

The full schedule is below. For those wondering again, I determine the matches by a procedure that includes a random draw against mostly similar models. So, none of these are my creation.

My spin:

 

A few shooting stars have been spotted in these results. Emily Ratajkowski, Rose Bertram, and Hannah Ferguson all continued to impress and will keep ascending the rankings after their victories. Rose and Hannah were especially impressive for beating up on legitimate opposition in Jessica Gomes and Vendela Kirsebom, respectively.

 

Marloes Horst inexplicably doubled up SI icon Christie Brinkley. I voted for Christie without hesitation, but I was obviously in the minority on this one. Impressive victory for Marloes.

 

Genevieve Morton came into this friendly cycle ranked #6, and she may creep up the rankings even further after a convincing win over Ana Beatriz Barros. 

 

Kelly Rohrbach will continue her ascent up the rankings with her win over the underappreciated Shannan Click, and Angela Lindvall shed all of her clothes to oust one of my personal favorites, Judit Masco, in a very close match.

 

Finally, there’s poor Anne V. She can’t seem to get much traction lately, and Brazilian beauty Izabel Goulart took her to task in this match.

My spin:
Even though it has happened a decent amount, I’m still amazed when an old-school SI legend gets trounced. This time, it was Cheryl Tiegs who was pounded by Yesica Toscanini. Yesica is an above average SI model, but I can’t see her pounding a legend like Cheryl Tiegs like she did. Oh well, that’s why it’s up to a public vote and not up to me! This result is sure to plummet poor Cheryl down the rankings, perhaps low enough to really affect her tournament hopes.

 

The other item of note was the awesome match between Natasha Barnard and Kim Cloutier. Natasha won by a nose, but it’s a result that will change their ratings only a miniscule amount. Both performed as expected and the outcome was just as close as expected.

My spin:
Very interesting matches in this batch! Hannah Davis won convincingly and impressively over #9 Josie Maran. The result will surely be enough to tumble Josie out of the top ten, but how much of a boost will Hannah get from her win?

 

Michelle Lombardo cleaned up against Yasmeen Ghauri, and she’ll shoot up the rankings again. Michelle entered the 2015 tournament ranked #112, and she entered this friendly round at #73. She may have a shot at the top 50 with this result. We’ll see!

 

Ashley Richardson eeked out a win against supermodel Angie Everhart, and Hailey Clauson had no trouble dispatching of Bregje Heinen. Bregje entered play ranked in the top 50, which completely befuddles me. I’m not a fan, personally, but she has had some good success in these competitions.
