Peter "Finn" Wittrock. Wittrock was born in Lenox, Massachusetts, the son of Kate Claire Crowley, a professor of occupational therapy at the University of Southern California and Peter L. Wittrock, an actor. He has a brother named Dylan. On his father's side, he is of Danish, Norwegian, and Austrian ancestry.

As a child, he grew up at the Shakespeare & Company theatre, where his father worked, and would often act as a pageboy or messenger.  As a teenager, he attended the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts where he would act, make films, and be a part of movement classes for actors. After graduating from high school, he got accepted into The Juilliard School but turned them down, hoping to get work in Los Angeles. He acted in some episodes for television but would often face rejection.

Wittrock auditioned for Juilliard the next year and was accepted again. He attended the school, where he was a member of the Drama Division's Group 37 (2004–2008). He was an active participant in the drama department and starred in several theatrical productions. He also won the Juilliard Journal Award in recognition of his outstanding contributions to Juilliard’s newspaper, The Juilliard Journal, and was the recipient of the Drama Division's Stephanie Palmer McClelland Scholarship. He graduated from Juilliard with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2008.

Finn began his Hollywood career in guest roles on several television shows before making his feature film debut in Twelve (2010). After studying theatre at The Juilliard School, he was a regular in the soap opera All My Children from 2009 to 2011, while performing in several theatrical productions. In 2011, he performed in playwright Tony Kushner's Off-Broadway play The Illusion and made his Broadway debut in 2012 as Happy Loman in the revival of Arthur Miller's play Death of a Salesman, directed by Mike Nichols.

In 2014, Wittrock made his first collaboration with director Ryan Murphy in the HBO television film The Normal Heart, based on the play of the same name. He also appeared in the films Winter's Tale and director Darren Aronofsky's Noah, playing a young Tubal-cain. He made his second collaboration with Ryan Murphy, playing the integral part of Dandy Mott on American Horror Story: Freak Show, the fourth season of the FX anthology series American Horror Story. For his performance, Wittrock received a nomination for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie. In his last project of 2014, he starred as World War II Air Force bombardier Francis "Mac" McNamara in Angelina Jolie's biographical war drama film Unbroken, which revolves around the life of USA Olympian and athlete Louis "Louie" Zamperini.

Wittrock marked his third collaboration with Murphy as model Tristan Duffy in the fifth installment of American Horror Story, subtitled Hotel. He will co-star in Adam McKay's upcoming drama film The Big Short  and in the upcoming musical La La Land directed by Damien Chazelle.

Finn Wittrock: 10 Things You Didn't Know About

1. He's named after a legendary hunter-warrior in the Irish mythology.

"I'm actually named after an Irish folk legend named Fionn MacCool, who is like a Celtic King Arthur," Wittrock told The Pine Valley Exposer back in 2010 when asked where his parents got his "unique" first name.

"Finn means 'fair,'" added Wittrock. "It is unusual, but you've probably heard of the female version of the name, which is Fiona."

2. He caught the acting bug from his dad.

An actor himself, Wittrock's dad, Peter, worked at Shakespeare & Company, a summer theater company based in Lennox, Mass. "I would be the pageboy or random messenger child in the plays," he revealed to the Interview magazine in December last year. "I would just sit there and listen every night. It's probably where I learned the most, honestly."

3. He considers soap operas as "boot camp for film actors."

After graduating from Juilliard with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 2008, Wittrock starred as Damon Miller on the soap opera "All My Children" from 2009 to 2011.

"Soap operas are like boot camps for film actors, so I really learned a lot," he said of his stint on the show in an interview with indieWire last year. "It was a masterclass in working for camera. I made myself watch myself every day. I would sort of try and be objective about it and critique myself a little. There's a lot more skill set than people realize, in soap operas. They shoot like 35 scenes a day. You have to trust your instinct and go for it."

4. He once worked at a frozen yogurt shop.

At age of 18, Wittrock decided to live in Los Angeles. And during his chat with the Interview magazine, he revealed in passing that he once worked at a frozen yogurt shop.

"It was good and bad," he said of his time in L.A. "I learned what it was like to work and what it was like to not work. I had a good few months where I was working at a frozen yogurt shop and just scraping by. Then I got a few guest stars and this little Disney Channel movie ['Halloweentown High,' 2004], so I learned both sides of that, which I think is important. It's good to know what it's like to not have it."

5. He would have pursued a career in journalism if he had not gone into acting.

Wittrock wrote several articles about different theater productions for The Juilliard Journal when he was in college, so his love for writing isn't really that surprising. But aside from being a journalist, he told Pine Valley Exposer that he would also like to be an architect, a surgeon or a professional sky diver if he had not gone into show business.

6. He loves to cook.

Wittrock revealed his love for cooking during an interview with Out magazine this past March. "I'm getting better," he said of his culinary skills.

When asked what he usually cooks, he said, "I'm a classic New York strip steak guy, and my dad has a special mashed potato recipe that he's allowed me to have, so I do that whenever possible."

7. He's scared of eels.

"I don't know my greatest fear, but snakes are scary," he revealed in his interview with Out magazine. "And this is very strange, but I have a weird thing about eels. You ever see an eel? I saw one in New Orleans and it was really freaky!"

8. He used to play baseball when he was a kid.

"I played baseball growing up, second base, and then when I got to high school it just didn't exist there," Wittrock -- who attended the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts -- told Sports Illustrated in December last year.

9. He owns a puppy.

"He's the cutest dog in the world," Wittrock told Out magazine of his pet dog named Zeke. "He's not from the street; I adopted him from a friend who needed to find a new home for him."

10. He's married.

Sorry ladies, Wittrock has been married to his fellow Juilliard graduate Sarah Roberts since October last year.
