Star Wars: The Force Awakens

All very exciting, feels decidedly 'retro' Star Wars. You can already tell that it's not directed by Lucas, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Liked seeing the various spaceships doing stuff on a planet rather than in space. Quite like the cross-shaped sabers as well, I sense there'll be fewer hands getting cut off in this one. :hiro:

Not sure about the droid on top of a ball though, that seemed fairly random.

Latino Review is the site behind this news, and has also confirmed (via a reliable source) that, as many have suspected, the second Force Awakens teaser will be attached to the Disney-backed Marvel Studios sequel Avengers: Age of Ultron this upcoming May… in the U.S., that is. Those filmgoers across the pond may well get to see the second Force Awakens trailer on the big screen first (since Age of Ultron opens in countries like Australia in late April) – after the teaser drops online for everyone to watch, no doubt.

Saw someone tweeting a link to screenrant.com about this article. So it's safe to say it's probably true considering they have a reliable source, hopefully it's very reliable. If it is indeed true then it will be good for me as I'll be seeing The Avengers in late April.

ROGUE ONE IS THE FIRST STAR WARS STAND-ALONE FILM, RIAN JOHNSON TO WRITE AND DIRECT STAR WARS: EPISODE VIII

THE TITLE FOR DIRECTOR GARETH EDWARDS' STAND-ALONE MOVIE, FEATURING ACTRESS FELICITY JONES, IS REVEALED, AND RIAN JOHNSON IS CONFIRMED FOR STAR WARS: EPISODE VIII -- COMING TO THEATERS MAY 26, 2017.

“Always in motion is the future,” Yoda said. The future of the Star Wars cinematic galaxy, however, is taking shape.

This morning at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco, across the street from Lucasfilm, Disney chairman and CEO Bob Iger hosted a shareholder meeting where he announced news regarding the first Star Wars stand-alone movie as well as Star Wars: Episode VIII.

Rogue One is the title for the first film in a unique series of big-screen adventures that explores the characters and events beyond the core Star Wars saga. Rogue One will be directed by Gareth Edwards (Monsters, Godzilla) and written by Oscar nominee Chris Weitz (Cinderella, About a Boy, Antz). The first actress cast is Felicity Jones, who garnered an Academy Award nomination and critical acclaim for her performance in The Theory of Everything. The idea for the story of Rogue One came from John Knoll, an Academy Award-winning visual effects supervisor and chief creative officer at Industrial Light & Magic. He will executive produce along with Simon Emanuel (The Dark Knight Rises, Fast & Furious 6) and Jason McGatlin (Tintin, War of the Worlds). Kathleen Kennedy and Tony To (Band of Brothers, The Pacific) are on board to produce and John Swartz (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) will co-produce. The film starts shooting this summer in London and is due for release on December 16, 2016.

In addition, Iger confirmed that Rian Johnson will write and direct Star Wars: Episode VIII. The film, which continues the saga after the events of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, is set for release on May 26, 2017 — forty years and a day after the release of Star Wars: A New Hope in 1977. Johnson is widely considered one of cinema’s most gifted young filmmakers, having directed the modern sci-fi classic, Looper, as well as Brick and The Brothers Bloom. He was also behind the camera for three episodes of the critically-acclaimed TV series Breaking Bad, including “Ozymandias,” which series creator Vince Gilligan named as the best installment of the show. Kathleen Kennedy and Ram Bergman, producer of Looper, Don Jon, Brick, and The Brothers Bloom, are on board to produce, and J.J. Abrams will serve as executive producer.

They’ve a director there in Rian Johnson who could certainly deliver, although it's a surprise to see them ruling out a return for Abrams at such an early stage. Did they tell him he wasn't allowed any more lens flare or something?

True enough, although the individual writers and directors of the original trilogy were all basically working to serve George Lucas's vision. If there's no-one around to oversee the franchise in the same way Lucas did back then, then the three films could differ quite a bit in style. That could be a good or bad thing.

I'm not twitching with excitement yet, but it was pretty good. Nice to see that the old guard (Hamill, Ford and Bacca) don't appear to be phoning it in just for the cash. I liked the opening shot a lot too, I was so busy looking at the speeder at the beginning that I didn't realise what was in the background until it was fully onscreen.

The only real worry for me is that most of the quick shots look a lot like content from the original trilogy. New versions of Stormtroopers, new R2-style droid, new Vader-esque bad guy. At this point, it seems deliberate, but I'd like to see the movie start marking its own territory a bit more.

I like the trailer so much! I can't wait for this movie to be out, the fact that we're still more than six months away is torture  :chicken:  What I like the most about is that (so far) it doesn't look like it will be a completely different direction from the previous movies.
