First, let’s start in Group 43, where Jessica Perez had a predictably easy time with Jamee Becker, but Sonia Dara claimed a shocking victory over supermodel Niki Taylor. Niki got bounced out of the tournament in her first match last year, losing to Molly Sims. So, that was nothing to be alarmed at. But, this loss to Sonia Dara leaves me questioning if Niki was really a contender in this group. Perhaps not. I think she’ll obviously win some of her matches, but she can’t afford losses like this when she’s in a group with Jessica Perez and Laetitia Casta. Meanwhile, over in Group 44, rookie Gigi Hadid had an impressive victory over Kelly Emberg, and Rita Tellone pulled off another surprise in beating SI covergirl Yvette Sylvander. In Group 45, the results were predictable, but the newsworthy item here is Bregje’s clean sheet victory over Roshumba Williams. Bregje becomes the 5th model so far in Group Stage competition to record a clean sheet. Finally, there’s Group 25 and controversial model Chrissy Teigen. People seem to either love or hate her, but she took care of Irina Pantaeva easily. The other match was interesting, pitting two people likely considered in the supermodel class, as well: Karen Mulder and Kara Young. Kathy becomes the 6th model in this year’s tournament to record a clean sheet victory. In Group 47, the rookies continued their assault on the tournament as Sara Sampaio crushed Naomi Campbell. Finally, a surprise result from Group 26, where Renee Simonsen knocked off Michelle Vawer. I assumed that Michelle would be the main competitor to Judit Masco for first place in the group, but those hopes took a serious hit. What are your thoughts? Post and share them! The Group 5 favorite, #5 ranked Yamila Diaz-Rahi, got a serious scare from rookie Valerie van der Graaf. But, she pulled it out and got the important 3 points for the win. Group 6Daniela Pestova (65.0%) defeated Marloes Horst (35.0%)Beri Smither (58.8%) defeated Quiana Grant (41.2%) Group 7Irina Shayk (86.7%) defeated Amber Noelle Ehresmann (13.3%)Jeisa Chiminazzo (87.5%) defeated Micheline Lee (12.5%) Group 8Brooklyn Decker (75.0%) defeated Shana Zadrick (25.0%)Erin Gray (100.0%) defeated Anna Getaneh (0.0%) Group 28Kim Alexis (88.2%) defeated Jane Gill (11.8%)Hilary Rhoda (66.7%) defeated Monica Bellucci (33.3%) My spin:In Group 8, things got a little weird, as Erin Gray became the 7th - and most unlikely - member of the clean sheet club, as she got 100% of the vote against Anna Getaneh. All of this after Erin lost her first match! To add to the weirdness, Anna has had two matches so far, one against Brooklyn Decker and this one against Erin. She managed to get 17.5% of the votes against #8-ranked Brooklyn but couldn’t get any votes against #126-ranked Erin. Huh? That’s why I enjoy doing this tournament! In less weird news, Brooklyn dominated a worthy opponent in Shana Zadrick to improve to 2-0 in round robin play. In Group 6, Beri Smither also bounced back from an earlier loss to beat Quiana Grant. In the same group, Marloes Horst made her debut against #6 ranked Daniela Pestova. Tough debut! Daniela won rather easily. Other results were pretty much as expected. What are your thoughts? So, now we have completed one full round robin cycle and are 1/4 of the way through the second one. In this batch, there were no real surprises, other than the low margin of victory for Anne V. What a showing for Veronica Blume against her, and if Veronica shows this well in her other matches, she may very well sneak her way into the Knockout Stage of the tournament! What are your thoughts? Group 12Kate Upton (87.5%) defeated Jarah Mariano (12.5%)Alicia Hall (95.0%) defeated Carmen Luisa Vela (5.0%) Group 13Paulina Porizkova (100.0%) defeated Michaela Bercu (0.0%)Irina Gerasimenko (89.5%) defeated Annette Molen (10.5%) Group 14Bar Refaeli (88.5%) defeated Ana Paula Araujo (11.5%)Pixie Peterson (77.8%) defeated Tanga Moreau (22.2%) My spin:In Group 13, Paulina Porizkova became the 7th winner with a clean sheet, as she left Michaela Bercu in the dust. Michaela had a decent showing in last year’s tournament, so a clean sheet was not expected. Group 13 looks like a two-horse race with Paulina and Yasmeen Ghauri likely to slug it out for first place. The others don’t look up to the task. In Group 12, her majesty Kate Upton made mincemeat of Jarah Mariano, and Alicia Hall rebounded from her loss to beat up on Carmen Luisa Vela. Finally, in Group 14, Bar Refaeli looks like every bit of the favorite she is, and she cruised to another victory. What are your thoughts? Post and share them! Group 18 Vendela Kirsebom (93.8%) defeated Brandi Quinones (6.2%) Ana Paula Lemes (93.3%) defeated Gail O’Neill (6.7%) Group 19 Ashley Richardson (58.8%) defeated Malia Jones (41.2%) Yasmin Brunet (100.0%) defeated Paulette Kieon (0.0%) Group 20 Rachel Hunter (93.3%) defeated Turia Mau (6.7%) Carol Latimer (76.9%) defeated Charissa Craig (23.1%) My spin: Group 19 had the most interesting matches today. I was curious to see how Malia Jones would stack up against Ashley Richardson, and the answer was: pretty well! Malia still lost, but she held her own and gave 19th-ranked Ashley a test. In the other match in Group 19, Yasmin Brunet rebounded from a loss in her first match to dominate Paulette Kieon and capture the 11th clean sheet of this year’s tournament. Other results were right in line with expectations. Of note, perhaps, is the battle of throwback models in Group 20. Carol Latimer had an easy win over Charissa Craig.
