Fitting the au courant androgynous aesthetic to a T, it’s no surprise that top designers, including Chanel, Proenza Schouler and Céline, clamored to cast 20-year-old Mijo Mihaljcic for their fall runways. Mihaljcic, on the other hand, was a bit perplexed. “I was really confused — I couldn’t believe this was all happening,” the Serbia native says of her success. And while she may be new to the biz, Mihaljcic knows how to be tight-lipped when it comes to industry name-dropping. WWD sat down with the IMG model in an attempt to pry some insider information about her unbelievable first season.

WWD: How did you start modeling?

Mijo Mihaljcic: I modeled in Serbia, but I cannot compare that [to what I’m doing now], so I just say I started in November. It was the end of November when I first came to New York by myself to meet with IMG. Then I came back for the shows. I always wanted to do shows, but I didn’t expect that much.

WWD: Were you interested in fashion before you started modeling?

M.M.: Yes, of course. That’s why I was really excited when I started doing shows. You see these girls or designers or photographers in magazines and then you meet them in real life.

WWD: Who were you most excited to meet?

M.M.: I can’t say one person. It’s nice when you come to castings or fittings and meet really famous models. Then you know you’re in the right place.

WWD: Do you remember your first casting?

M.M.: Not really. On my first day, I had like 15 castings. I was nervous because I didn’t know if anything would happen or not. After I got my first show, BCBG, I was cool.

WWD: Did you get nervous walking for a big show?

M.M.: For me, I don’t see a difference between big shows or small shows. Of course, if the designer is big, there are more people around and you feel much more powerful. Every single show I did was special though because it was my first season.

WWD: How much sleep did you get during the collections?

M.M.: Not that much. In New York, I was sleeping only five hours per day, and then I got to London and I was sleeping one hour per day. That’s why you’ll always see models with a huge coffee. I can drink a lot of coffee, which is not that good. And I’m doing that even when I’m not working.

WWD: What was the hardest city for you?

M.M.: London. It was hard in the way that you couldn’t get sleep or free time. And then Paris was hard, because it’s the last city. There are a lot of important designers and important shows and every day you have to be happy and fresh. But you know that it’s just a few days so after that, you’ll remember everything in a good way and have time to sleep.

WWD: What were you most surprised to learn?

M.M.: I learned not really about fashion, but about life — how everything is possible. You really need to be patient and learn how to wait. Just believe in yourself. Before all this happened, it was my biggest dream to do fashion week and to work with all these designers.

WWD: Do any of the shows that you walked stand out?

M.M.: Maybe Chanel because they had the planet! It was really exciting. I was so happy to be there. When we came to the set for rehearsal, we were all shocked. It looked amazing.

WWD: What was it like to work with Karl Lagerfeld?

M.M.: Every designer that is famous and successful, they are really nice and normal people. I thought they would be more like stars. That really surprised me, in a good way.

WWD: Are you looking forward to next season?

M.M.: I miss it a lot! I feel like last season was 100 years ago. Things are quieter now, but at least I’m going to bed really early.

So glad to see that Mila's getting much more print work. :) She's definitely quite expressive.

(PS: I'd prefer to call her Mila rather than Mijo. 'Cuz when I first saw her and checked her name on style.com, her name is written as Mila Mihaljcic...The same with Antonina Vaslychenko, I'd rather call her "Antonina" than "Tonya". LOL)

yeah it gets kinda confusing when models go by nicknames. :p The site where I first took notice of her referred to her as Mijo and that was what was written on her showcard and most of what's wriiten on her, so I just went with that. I wonder which name she'll stick with/ what the majority will refer to her as is when/ if she gets more well known. :p

Design Scene Q&A With Runway Sensation Mijo at IMG Models

After her incredible first season on the runway, interviews with style.com, WWD, New York magazine's The Cut… Mila Mijo Mihaljčić sits down for a chat with us, talking about her skyrocketing modeling career path. In the recent Fall Winter 2013 runway season (her first international one), Mijo got under her belt an amazing number of 47 shows!

How did it all start?

My mother agency in Belgrade is Fox Model, joining IMG Models was always a dream of mine. Therefor by advice of FOX I went to New York to see various agencies, but thanks to my persistence I was sent to IMG. So one day I just packed, financed the trip myself and knocked on the door of IMG on my own. I was very nervous and even started to doubt myself, since I was very afraid of their initial reaction. But after ten minutes spent with them, they wanted me to sign the contract right away what a day after really happened. I stayed for few more days to do test shoots and got back to Serbia in January.

How did you get Mijo as your nickname? It sounds at the same time interesting and unique, as well as gender undefined.

Nickname Mijo i got from my younger sister Mina, back when we were kids. Two years ago my friend from Paris wanted to read a message I wrote in Serbian which I signed it with Mijo, however in french he read it as "Mižo" [mi.ʒɔ]. Which all sounded very cute to me and quickly became my nickname, now its even used as my name.

After such an incredibly successful season, how do you see it all looking back at it few weeks later?

Only now I'm starting to understand how much I achieved. It took quite awhile for me to process it all and realize what's actually going on, since that was something I always hoped for. But honestly I never imagined it will all happen at the same time, in my first season. Right from the first show at New York, BCBGMAXAZRIA, which I had the honor to close, I only wished for it all to continue with the same success, and my wish came true.

Did the speed of it all unravelling from New York to Paris give you a new perspective of the fashion industry?

We are talking about an incredible pace, it can all brings hardship and fatigue, a feeling familiar to everybody working at any fashion week. Nevertheless it is very exciting to in only one month be in all four fashion capitals, and at the same time be a part of it all.

Is the fashion speed equal to speed beyond runway? Or you manage to find some sort of a balance?

Now when the shows are over, of course I have more time to relax, actually during the fashion week such a moment did not even exist. But now it's time for major castings, editorial photo shoots and campaign work, which also last throughout the day, sometimes even more than a day. Still you get to travel from city to city, the pace is only a little slower.

How is such life different than the one in Belgrade, or perhaps it all depends on individual perspective?

No doubt its quite different from Belgrade, we are talking about cities which have their own fashion history and bigger capacity to organize such events on a much higher level. I am still hoping Belgrade will one day come closer to major fashion centres.

What do you miss the most when you think back of the time before you went to New York?

When I am in New York I am much more homesick than in Europe. I believe just thinking how far I am from Belgrade makes me feel that way, the fact there's an ocean between and more than two hours by plane… That's when I miss everything: Belgrade, studying, family, friends. I try to make it up by working and with wonderful moments I experience at work. There's nothing left to complain about!
