Karen Sheila Gillan (born 28 November 1987) is a Scottish actress. In May 2009, she was announced as the actress who will be playing the new companion, Amy Pond, in the television series Doctor Who.

Biography

Gillan was born and raised in Inverness, Scotland. Her father, Raymond John, a Day Centre Manager, and mother, Marie, live in Kinmylies. She attended school at Charleston Academy. Aged 16, she decided to pursue her acting career further, studying acting at Edinburgh's Telford College. Later, she secured a place at the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts drama school in London on the BA (Hons) Acting degree course. Gillan is based in London.

Career

Gillan gained her first television role in Rebus while still studying at Italia Conti, and has since had parts in The Kevin Bishop Show, Channel 4's Stacked and James Nesbitt's forthcoming film Outcast. While not acting, she has taken on occasional modelling roles, including 2007 London Fashion Week for designer Allegra Hicks' autumn/winter catwalk show. Gillan was seen in the Doctor Who episode entitled "The Fires of Pompeii" playing a soothsayer. Gillan will play Amy Pond, the companion to the Eleventh Doctor (portrayed by Matt Smith), beginning in 2010.

In the Autumn of 2009, Gillan starred in a teen thriller called The Well. It was broadcast in the Switch Zone on BBC Two, with additional interactive content available on the BBC Switch website.

^Hadn't really seen Karen in much other than the Pompeii-themed episode of 'Doctor Who', but that alone was more than enough to convert me. :hehe: Unfortunately, decent pics seem to be thin on the ground at the moment, although I'm confident that'll change once the new series gets underway. :laugh:
