His grandfather is Maurice Garrel and his godfather is actor Jean-Pierre Léaud, both of them also famous French actors.
Garrel is famous for his starring role in The Dreamers, directed by Bernardo Bertolucci, and for regularly appearing in films by French director Christophe Honoré, including Ma mère, Dans Paris and Les Chansons d'amour.
