Actor, screenwriter. Born October 8, 1970, in Boston, Massachusetts. After his parents divorced when he was a young child, Damon moved with his mother and older brother from the tony Boston suburb of Newton to a more modest neighborhood in Cambridge. He appeared in several local theater productions as an adolescent and worked as an extra on movies filming in or around Boston alongside his childhood friend and fellow aspiring actor Ben Affleck. At 16, Damon auditioned for a New York casting agent and later l anded his first film role, a one-line appearance in 1988’s Mystic Pizza, starring Julia Roberts.

While a student at Harvard University, Damon appeared in a Turner Network Television (TNT) movie, Rising Son (1990), with Brian Dennehy. In 1992, he landed his first substantial role, as an obnoxious young WASP in School Ties, also featuring the up-and-coming young actors Brendan Fraser, Chris O’Donnell, and Affleck. Soon after, he dropped out of Harvard just shy of earning his degree in English and moved to Los Angeles to pursue acting more seriously.

After landing an important supporting role in Geronimo: An American Legend (1993), starring heavy-hitters Gene Hackman and Robert Duvall, Damon made his first starring turn in the 1995 TNT movie The Good Old Boys, costarring Tommy Lee Jones, who also cowrote and directed. Damon’s breakthrough performance, however, came in the 1996 film Courage Under Fire, costarring Denzel Washington and Meg Ryan.

Damon lost 40 pounds and reportedly became dangerously ill in preparation for his role as a strung-out Army medic in the Gulf War drama, for which he earned a good deal of critical praise.

The following year, Francis Ford Coppola cast Damon as the lead in his film adaptation of John Grisham’s best-selling novel The Rainmaker (1997), costarring Danny DeVito and Claire Danes. After the news that Damon snagged the high-profile role broke, he and Affleck were finally able to close the deal on the sale of their screenplay, Good Will Hunting. Originally conceived by Damon during a playwriting class at Harvard, the script had attracted offers from several interested studios, which Damon and Affleck had turned down, insisting that they be allowed to star. With advice from such luminaries as Rob Reiner and William Goldman, Damon and Affleck revised their script and subsequently sold the rights to Miramax.

With Damon in the lead, and Affleck, Minnie Driver, and Robin Williams in crucial supporting roles, Good Will Hunting became a sleeper hit in 1997, scoring nine Oscar nominations, including nods for Best Actor (Damon), Best Supporting Actor (Williams), Best Supporting Actress (Driver), Best Director (Gus Van Sant), and Best Picture. While Damon lost out to Jack Nicholson in the acting category, he and Affleck took home the award for Best Original Screenplay, an achievement that kicked both their careers into high gear.

In 1998, Damon played the title role in Steven Spielberg’s World War II epic Saving Private Ryan, one of the most acclaimed films of the year.

As the stubborn young Ryan, Damon held his own opposite the movie’s star, Tom Hanks, who played the leader of a small group of men sent to find Ryan and send him home for the sake of his mother after all four of his brothers are killed. That same year, he starred as an earnest law student and reformed poker player in Rounders, also featuring Edward Norton and John Malkovich.

Damon rejoined his friend Affleck (fresh from the summer action blockbuster Armageddon) in Dogma (1999), a sharp, irreverent comedy written and directed by Kevin Smith and also featuring the comedian Chris Rock. Near the end of 1999, he took on his riskiest role to date—that of Tom Ripley, a working-class young man who tastes the good life and will do anything to make it his own, in Anthony Minghella’s lush adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s dark novel, The Talented Mr. Ripley. Costarring Jude Law as Dickie Greenleaf, the golden object of Ripley’s affection, and Gwyneth Paltrow as Greenleaf’s equally golden girlfriend, The Talented Mr. Ripley earned somewhat mixed reviews, but critics singled out both Damon’s and Law’s performances for praise. (Law received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor.)

In 2000, Damon lent his voice to the animated space epic Titan A.E., which met with a mediocre reception among critics and audiences. Later that year, he headlined an adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s novel All the Pretty Horses (2000), as well as the golf comedy-drama The Legend of Bagger Vance (2000), directed by Robert Redford and costarring Will Smith.

In 2003, he signed on to star in Steven Soderbergh's adaptation of The Informant and the Farrelly Brothers' Stuck on You. Damon has been romantically linked in the past to costars Claire Danes and Minnie Driver. A two-year romance with the actress Winona Ryder ended in the spring of 2000.

Hollywood actor MATT DAMON has confirmed he's signed up for a second sequel to THE BOURNE IDENTITY - but will happily drop out of the project if the script is anything less than brilliant.

Damon played spy JASON BOURNE in The Bourne Identity and its follow-up THE BOURNE SUPREMACY, and is ready to go to work on third film THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM should a decent screenplay be written.

He tells website EMPIREONLINE.COM, "We'll probably do that in about a year and a half. We're all signed on in principle, in the sense that we've all agreed that we want to do it, but we're not going to do it unless we have a great script.

"If we do make a third one, we want to make it as good as the first two. And if we can't do that, then we're going to have to let it drop."

The Bourne Supremacy star Matt Damon worked with members of the Massachusetts police force for three days, in order to gain some experience for his new role as an undercover police officer.

Damon decided that training was necessary for his role in The Departed, which also stars Leonardo Dicaprio and Jack Nicholson.

"We showed him frisk tactics and pat downs - and no, we didn't try them on him," state police Sergeant Daniel Risteen is quoted by Teen Hollywood as saying.

"He seemed like he had a pretty good working knowledge [already]. Things weren't going over his head."

On his final night of training, Damon watched as three suspects were arrested, and detectives recovered $1,000 in drug money and paraphernalia.
